Two outings, at home

It turns out that this is the moment of balance, when night and day take equal shares in our swing around the Sun. It also happens that today the children and I spent our whole day here, within a few hundred yards of where they now sleep. Perhaps this day represents balance in our lives, after weeks and months on the road.

Wish i had captured in pixels for you the look of joy and companionship on Violet and Satya's faces as they rode 2-wheeler bikes -- Vayu for the first time -- after "quiet time" today. I helped her start and ran about 10 feet with her, and then off she pedaled, balancing the thing like she'd done it before. Actually i think Satya was more thrilled than she.

I might fill you in from time to time on how the kids can turn simple toys against each other as weapons of terror. But we also share moments of joy.

Balance. Between pain and joy, past and present, and between me and her. Sara is out in the world, far afield: this weekend in Seattle for a 3-day workshop on applied learning research (a study-skills class for MBA students at BGI). Last week to a meeting in Jackson, WY. Most days she rides the bus to her office on Bainbridge Island, 15 miles from here, wearing the hat of Development Officer for the Bainbridge Graduate Institute.

After Tara finished napping today, the children and I set off to squeeze the last hour of sunlight out of the season. Pushed canoe out into the Sound, moon setting sail over ancient volcano, distant clouds pink in the east, catching light from sun crashing into western peaks. If it sounds idyllic that's because it is. But if I'm airbrushing the scene I'm doing it more for my own sake than for yours. I am really seeking, and building, a vital connection to this land and water, to this physical landscape and the social landscape that populates it. Seeking home, balance, salvation, on this turning from light into darkness -- and finding them.
